I know what the delay is... There was a massive screw-up and as a result Tuesdays auditions were infact not judged by Jo Whiley, but Jo Wile-E-Coyote and all the bands were sadly killed in a bizarre, ACME Rocket related accident.

The police are sifting for clues as we speak.

Allow me to reiterate... with the CoA and Witchfest, they are 100% on the level!

We've pulled out of the WF competition, but not because of the CoA. I'm count the organisers of WF as close friends and know that it's not rigged in any way. We've had to pull our due to commitments, but I'll be there, as I usually give a lecture and drink a lot whilst there.

My sauce says results wont be today!

Hiya all... I'm getting very weary of these competitions. My lot (Danse Macabre) entered a competion to play at Witchfest in Croydon - I think Torn Asunder, who have posted on here, also entered - but since we registered they've they've now changed the rules and are asking bands to pay to audition. Makes you feel really wanted... x P x

methinks i am going to retreat with my ripe juicy oranges cos in the big scale of things, waiting for the results isn't as annoying as waiting for a slacker but genius lead guitarist to turn up to practice for studio....grrr....

As far as studios are concerned, we're laying down 3 new tracks at the end of October. Will blow the other stuff that we have OUT OF THE WATER!!!!

Interesting stuff guys. Fame plays a part in what we all do, although its not the driver, but very few of us ever think it through, and rationalise it. Yet the casualty rate in this business is quite high.
Who would think you can play stadiums with one of the biggest bands in the world; Oasis, and then walk away from it all. But plenty have.
Although I reckon this fame thing has got to be easier to deal with than waiting around for orange. Come on guys, tell us something!!!!!

...but friedkimmel, thats my point, she will sell loads for years to come. but, amy is not a winner through fame, i am talking about her human life here, not the material aspects.
in the past i have been forced put my health before wealth. i would rather live poor as a nobody and have the people i love around me than be dead and confused about who i should trust. the only winners are the people making money out of her predicament.

axl rose also had mental health difficulties, he is still quite reclusive as an artist. fame ruined Gnr too as the original line up are no longer together. as i said before u have to try to go in knowing that if u sleep with the devil there will be a price to pay...fame is a double edged sword...u have to battle wisely...

To me, fame is a byproduct of making it. If we get famous, we want it to be because people love our music. Whilst I'm sure that antics will also get publicity, we certainly don't want to be like Jodie Marsh or Jade... IE famous for no reason whatsoever. So if wanting lots and lots of fans mean that we want fame, then yes, we're fame junkies!

Has fame ruined amy winehouse or has the press ensured she'll be able to release music for many years to come by making headlines from here. It's a harsh business but ask her if she'd prefer to be famous and ridiculed or be a no-body and skint?

Fame is the same thing weather youre playing wembly or in celeb mags. Do you think if GNR came out now axl rose wouldn't make celeb mags???? Even your most rock and roll or rock and rollers want to be famous even if they pretend they dont.

i am also looking forward to svein93 reviews, he did some good ones on here before. i have a very ecclectic music taste and will talk about my faves in the top 50. not a music reviewer but i have written both social and music articles for magazines including one on whether 'Queering the N word' is possible in Diva Magazine for gay and bi women.

thanks for the suppot on the fame thing :) I truly meant it in a positive sense. all bands and artists that have signed up to this contest or attended the open auditions are passionate about their music and talent 'else they wouldn't apply.. but ask anyone to name famous bands who they aspire to, they would name them without big debates on the word famous. to appear on tv.. and succeed in the music industry is to become famous in my eyes but hey thats just my opinion.. i meant it in a positive and non insulting manner.. and whatever gender, colour, age or weight .. does it matter.. everyone is liked by someone , but not every band is everyones taste , just respect bands for doing what they feel is their passion .. and passion for music is paramount.. its what you want to do every day if your committed respect others for theirs

the spoils of fame have ruined amy winehouse' future as a singer. the brit press has turned music into a freak show where artists are seen for their weight gain/loss. part of my thesis is on the symbolic burning of modern day witches in music...in medieval times witches bodies were seacrhed for signs of the devil and marked accordingly...this still happens today in the media...it is a modern day witch hunt where the musical essence of a person is lost their charred remains...

Here's the TA point of view on the fame vs substance.

Define fame... If fame means that you sell out stadiums and play your music for hundreds of thousands of people who appreciate the music you write and play, then hell yeah, sign us up. If fame is Heat magazine posting pics of you in less than flattering circumstances, but you're not actually known for your music, then hell no! We want to entertain. You watch the old footage of bands like Queen and GNR at places like Wembley... that's what we want, and we have a sound that BELONGS on that sort of stage!

We don't want fame, for fame's sake!

And the Svein93 reviews will be HONEST and will not slag off bands for the sake of making TA look better. No point in that!

Yep! True! You have to look at yourselves as a working business and then operate as a business would. Drop all the preciousness that you have about your music, forget what it means to you and look at it as a product and see if it fits in todays market. People who can't look at thier music without bias dont deserve success. The music industry is all about acting. If you think you'll get somewhere from writing from the heart in this day and age your wrong. All of your favourite bands and musicians are ACTORS all of thier songs that you can relate to have been approved by the label and marketed for you. You like it because youre the demographic! i'm avin a rant to no-one lol

What is that something? Being successful in a band basically means being famous to one level or another. It may not be your driving force but I think it probably is your goal. Any band that applies to be on tv or enters competitions surley can't deny thier overall objectve is to get thier band famous!

Certainly dont disagree with a lot of what you say Friedkimmel. The point I was responding to, probably badly. lol. was that fame is not the driving force for what we do, but a bi-product. Most of us go into music because we love it, we take it one stage further, through recording, performing, etc, because we believe in what we are doing. We enter competitions like this to get our music out there, and hopefully to get someone in the business interested in what we do.
I just dont accept that the driving force for what most of us do is fame, and we only enter competitions such as these to get on the telly.

p.s had i been in the top 50 i would still be outspoken about such things and would have honoured the opportunity that would have given me.

i feel there is a big difference between being bitter and having a social conscience for justice in all things...diversity is REALLY IMPORTANT and the best way to enable that is through discussion...

due to my life experiences things i have suffered for being born a certain way i feel things acutely so i have a passion to understand why things are the way they are...

..for eg; at the audition i couldn't understand why more people of colour hadn't turned up, i was only 1 out of about ten in over a thousand...these things alert me to the way society behaves...

i am not playing the race card but i think its important to bring up that our society is still unconsciously biased and the need to include diversity in all areas of our society is paramount, or maybe people of my colour were to cool to turn up and queue for 6 hours...and i am just a nerd!

so thats why i hope the acts are full of rich diverse magic...when i say things about being fat and old...i dont say them as negatives...i sew them as human rainbows...

Fame is only the downside to the business if you plan to stay playing to 30 people in a dank pub!
Fame is a vehicle to ensuring you can produce music on a full time basis. All these bands who claim that fame is a bad thing are living in a paradox where they want to play thier music to thousands of people but dont wanna be famous. I think it's a credibility issue where bands think it's faux pa to wanna be famous. Why would you wanna enter this comp if not to be famous? Surely every band that entered this comp wanted to be on tv?? But of course none of them wanted to be famous!!! LOL

Just a quick point Angel Eyes. `really committed to fame'? We are committed to our music. If we were committed to fame we would be on Pop Idol, Big Brother, or doing something outrageous. Fame is the downside to this business.
On a different subject. Whats going on over at Myspace? Didn't know that was coming. If the figures are correct we dont need orange anymore. 30,000 plays today. Now why do we think those figures might be incorrect? lol.

theres a lot of tension and sour grapes in these comments, i feel sorry for the bands who have got through, as they have deserved their position in the top 50 either by their fans and the publics vote, or the judges vote.. and i hope this competition isn't spoiled by mean people who are going to leave nasty comments .. just cos they never made it.. think on you may not have made it this time but dont shaft yourselves by spoiling it for the winners as one day if your really committed to fame it could be your turn and things may come back and bite you in the arse..
be good losers and not bitter ones.

sam - or anyone else at orange reading this - does the six months rule apply to bands that you are not interested in?

and oh yeah - we're not through - but we dont care as come monday we will have had three of the tracks from our forthcoming ep played on radio - in the uk, the us and australia

Let's face it... the winning "act" is going to be the one that can make Universal the most amount of money. That's how the X-Factor works and all these things work. It's about return of investment. It's not necessarily going to be the best act, but the best song.

Who will get through? Gawd it's taking forever one thing though I believe peeps have forgotten what has been going on this year, many folk harping on about indie bands well I think we could well be in for a big shock as solo singer songwriters are a VERY BIG part of this years comp. I think we will probably see some real diversity. Well I sincerely hope so.

As I've said before there truly is so much talent out there everyone is a winner in my eyes. Then again I am merely a lowly music fan with eclectic tastes. Good luck one and all I sure hope we get to know who goes through tomorrow. Be positive and keep smiling :-)

Hey ppl, just to put a lighter note on things...
tensions building hot on here ! lol.

I auditioned on saturday and since then i'm releasing my album officially independently on CDBaby, iTunes, Napster, and a ton more places, plus i'm toying with HMV distribution for my album.
I know I didn't make a great impact on Saturday due to all the standing around I did and I would love to know what they thought of my album when I gave them it at the audition- but I am really happy even though I didn't get through, and I have some exciting things happening for me at the mo- with radio interviews and press reviews of my music to look forward to up until the release of the album "I'll Stand By You" on the 1st November digitally. Followed by a single in December.

I can't wait guys and I would love you all to help support me- especially the ones that didn't get through- i'm happy to share my knowledge with you ;-)

The truth is the majors are failing and new business models, such as slicethepie, are being introduced all the time. What actually constitutes a record deal nowadays? At one time a major gave you loads of lolly to record and get the product out. Hell, in the good old days they even included in the advance enough for you to enjoy some recreational activities!
In my simplistic view I would have thought that a deal with say slicethepie would be nothing compared to a publishing deal. But orange seam pretty relaxed about publishing deals. Their must be a nice music lawyer somewhere in the system who could explain it to us in bandspeak.
Conspiracy theory No 27. (Well we havent had one for a while) Maybe theirs nothing legally wrong with what you are doing with slicethepie. You bands are just being punished by the majors for daring to do it without them.

I heard that one of the chosen acts turned out to be Elvis, back from the dead, and it's got their lawyers in a twist as the rules don't say how reincarnated legends without current contracts should be treated. I heard it via the voices in my head, mind...

yawn...still i must admit, i'm very intrigued to hear the succesful bands

When I spoke with Princess TV on Monday evening, I was advised that because MySpace is user driven, it doesn't count. I've also asked about iTunes, personal websites and all that. Apparently, there's a difference between MySpace distributing your songs and Slice the Pie distributing it. I'm not entirely sure what the difference is, but there is one.

I guess the best way to decide whether or not a site "could" interfere with a recording contract is to either hire a music lawyer OR email the site BEFORE signing up.

Oi BirdFlu: I could be someone from those magazines... I could be anyone. Or how about this? I could be a member of the public who purchases music... So by insisting that UNLESS you're in the industry, you're opinion means nothing is a pretty blinkered view of the scene.

The Svein93 reviews have been a staple of this site for a while. It's something that I promise that I would do, and I'm a man of my word.

And to be perfectly honest, I really don't care whether it meets your approval or not.

zenyth, as far as i can rem, if u had your own publishing company which was relatively small a major record label would prob want to buy the rights to it or liase with it (as long as it gave them access to publishing rights). However, this would not be the case if you are with a major publisher that is in direct comp with the one that wants to sign you.

Oh, and another thing, the judges are looking for something very simple. A band that has good songs, is likeable and that will make money. Whatever genre that may be. That was the main emphasis of the show last year.

I have to disagree with you there Zenyth, even if you terminate your contract with slice the pie they still have non-exclusive access to your music and do lots with it that universal would in no way be happy with. I agree its harsh that bands have to leave competiton cos of it but it just goes to show that it pays to read the small print!

Record sales these days tie in a lot more to live performances. Most of the money is made from live performances these days.
You only need to sell 50,000 albums in a week to reach number 1 in the charts not a lot compared to the 80s and prior when it was 4 times that much.
Bands like elbow have done very very well because of their live performances not because of album sales, now look at them after there barnstormer at glasto they got number 1 album and a mercury prize. Ptretty much gurantee if they didnt rock glasto their year would be like any other year.

ohh and yes, you may wonder why a couple of bands will be shockingly awful...come on guys, it makes great tv if we like it or not! Look at X-Factor - there ratings are huge at the start cuz people like to see crap people make a fool of themselves, no doubt we may see this program follow suit... i cud be wrong.

Yep I agree with you Madman - why are people constantly saying "I didnt get through cuz i'm not what the judges are looking for" when 25 of the bands were put through purely by votes - so that means as long as the bands good and has a good and loyal following then they have a chance of getting through. Given the fact that many TV programs have had substantial fines because of cheating/conspiracy's etc then it's probably not in Ch4's best interests to put through bands of their choosing and ignore the votes. Whereas the other 25 bands were put through on the judges criteria - YES it will be because of what sells!!! They want good bands which are popular and will oull in record sales, after all, there a company like any other - THEY NEED TO MAKE MONEY!!! get over it! just be happy for the bands who have been lucky enuf to get through...and enjoy the show!

As for slicethepie when you sign up you are not tied into anything and you can pull out you can even decline the £15000 if you get that far, so all that is rubbish sorry orange but thats a bit of a no no!

We would love to see a great great live act with big guitars and good rock tunes. Is that to much to ask. Something like The Raconteurs, Kings of Leon, Audioslave, Incunus mould.

I don't think its fair, and its pretty pathetic too, for some of you to just assume
that this competitions finalists are bound to be "indie/emo" bands.
You cant make a just opinion until you've actually seen the list of who's gone through,
so why dont you wait till they are announced before makin such judgements?
For all you know the bands this year could be a great mix of genre, something original,
granted, most of the music industry these days, is about being a typical mainstream band, that makes it big,
because it sells well,
but its not always the case, like ive already said, wait until you've actually seen the list of bands that have made it before makin a judgement, at the moment you just sound bitter.

It's been said that Jo Whiley's contract with Radio 1 states that because of her connection with Orange Unsigned, any successful bands music cannot be played on Radio 1. Maybe this explains why Envy and Other Sins have not really had much exposure. When they won the comp. last year, they were doing gigs on the London circuit, but just recently they are sticking to smaller venues in their home town (B'ham). Seems like they are still signed to Universal in some sense or another but they dont seem to be having much backing or support by the label. I think if my sources are correct...a little concerning for the winning band!

some of the acts on here who didnt get thru are amazing in my eyes, maybe they weren't right for orange but that dont mean they are not good enough! if u gonna make digs or post annonymously without sweating blood and tears like the rest of us then why should we respect what u have to say?

i am hoping some of the final acts are amazing....and i have a feeling a couple might be who have been fairly quiet on here of late...kinda feel 4them tho for the pressure they must be under...a lot to live up to methinks...

Well, it's funny, but I watched the Bad Robots audition thing last year, and they were loved by Jo, Alex and Simon, and disliked by Lily. It's the only time I've ever agreed with Lily Allen. So even if there is a real diversity in the 50 or so acts that get to the audition stage, if the judges are looking for indie, then the finals will end up an indiefest no matter what. I hope that the judges DON'T go down that road, but who knows.

You've got it there my friend. If you look at things now... I think the Arctic Monkeys are dire, Coldplay boring and Keane need to be lined up against the wall and shot... but a boatload of peeps love them. I think GNR were one of the greatest bands ever, yet a lot of people disagree.

Not to sure we will get any clearer idea on an indie/duffy fest once the 50+ are announced Svein. At least 25 bands will get through on votes, and they could be from any genre.

Be interesting to see if any of those who got through last year on votes, get through again this year.

And Bird_Flu... you're wrong. I know for a fact that there have been artists who got through and then were disqualified because of Slice the Pie.

We've gotten over it... we're moving on. Our only desire, and this has been explained to our contact at Princess TV, that in the future, making it CLEAR what sites they KNOW about that would make a band ineligable would be handy, but as we were told... new sites pop up all the time.

Biggest advise that we can give people is that you need to look at the legal print, and if anywhere is says that they "reserve the right to use uploaded material for their own purposes" or words to that effect, then you're gonna have problems with contests like this, because record companies do not like sharing with anyone!

Personally I've listened to dozens of really good bands on here and if they were put into the hands of a gifted producer who's to say they wouldn't sell millions!
I would like to hear the winners, and I will tip my hat to Orange if I'm bowled over, but I somehow doubt it!

Not 3 months guys, SIX MONTHS. That's what I was told by our contact at Orange UnsignedAct (Princess TV in other words) when we were advised that we were just outside of the Top 50.

As far as an indie/duffy fest... I'm reserving judgement until the Top 54 have been announced and then the Svein93 Reviews will be extremely honest! And that incudes calling bands awful if they are... (like Bad Robot last year... no offence, but they were diabolical)

I would advise anyone on Slice the Pie... if you plan on entering the contest, terminate your SLP membership by no later than the end of Feb.

People need to get over this slice the pie stuff. It was all explained by the production crew in a previous blog. There's no injustice/conspiracy, you just weren't good enough.

Wouldn't like to argue that point Meg & Mark. No one thought being part of slicethepie would be a problem; but it was for Orange!
Although 3 months shouldn't be too much of a problem anyway, particularly if youre signing with a major. It would take that amount of time to put the deal together.
Although it would be a bit of an embarassment for orangeunsigned for a band not selected to have a big hit whilst the comp is still going on.

We understand we couldnt go through because of Slice The Pie.

But we are so close to getting a 1 album deal on there now anyway so hey ho!

my mates have consoled my loss here with tickets to see Siouxsie Sioux at Koko's next monday! yay!

...and tonight i get to to see my friend and her wife's twin baby boys, newborns! huge double yay!

5 days ago someone was dying to tell us who the finalists are - has someone died?

Will be interesting to see what sort of bands they were looking for, this seems never ending!!

I should imagine they already know who they think will win the competition by now, I hope the band that win the record deal get better promotion than last years winners, I didn't watch last year and had never heard of the band that won 'Envy & Other Sins' till I found the orange myspace page and got the band I help out The Screening to enter the competition

Don't know about losing interest in who is in the final 50. But I'm sure getting fed up having to refresh this page every 10 mins to see if their is another comment.

look, this is the deal. i am a very pasionate person and i live according to my passions which yes makes me a bit of a fruit bat.

if i feel good people or myself are being put down i cant help but act. words are very powerful...and its important that the meaning behind them is explained...i have spoken about my hopes and fears quite openly on this blog and my friends know (because of certain issues in my life) how important it is for me to be vocal and in my truth...sometimes i misfire...most times i dont....but, even human error will always bring out a light in the tunnel...

anyway, what an exciting start to the morning...i must dash off tho...

well indeed these blogs have gone very quiet - we're losing interest in who is in the final preliminary provisional certified line up -

however... we were played on tom robinson introducing and rockstarsglued radio on monday... and we're being played on the underground aussie 2ser fm sydney early next week - three radio shows, three continents, in the space of one week - how many of the 54 bands selected will be able to say that?

Why does everyone think it's them that is talked about when someone says something controversial?

run dont walk, u can insult our intelligence with caustic put downs and yes i suppose it has a school boy sense of humour...but..

i have commented that a comp like this might be more geared to the youth market. i am not using that as an excuse for not being picked, its simply my opinion that this is a corporate based comp. i have been an advocate from the beginning that this is a gr8 comp to enter once u see it for what it is. i am looking forward to seeing who orange have picked.

i also know my my worth and have worked with a very well known producer and label in the past when i was less confident to cope. now that i am more confident i speak my truth and am not ashamed to do so. as a mixed race queer person i am very political in my views and will not be silenced out of peoples pure ignorance to not even try to understand where a person might be coming from in a challenging society.

funny also that you w8 till the main bands and bloggers are having a rest from all the effort we've put in here before u decide to miaow...

well.. we havnt been told we are through so im guessing we are not.. this competition will surely be empty and boring without FEUD making it through!

i suppose we can hope its not going to be the usual indie or emo fest that this country is sadly plagued with

Still 5 comments in 5 hours? That's pretty dire; I'm sensing some disenfranchised bands out there, then again I think we all predicted it; pardon my cynicism.
