Although over a thousand people turned up to the open auditions on Saturday, with the general standard being very high, we could only bring 26 acts back to perform for Jo Whiley.
Fresh faced youngsters Skyhorse were one of the 26 acts to perform in front of Jo.
Tuesday saw our production floor rammed with all manner of characters waiting for a chance to play in the studio for Jo – with the tension in the air thicker than Winehouse’s matted barnet.
Soulful Wreh Asha was one of the last artists to perform – the wait adding to the tension.
The 26 brought back to play for Jo spanned a variety of genres… not just indie bands.
Folk singer-songwriter Sarah Howells at the top of our studios.
Some acts travelled long distances for the chance to make it through to the next round. Tommy Reilly travelled from Glasgow, Charlie Barnes from Huddersfield and Jamie Joseph (below) from Derby.
Jamie Jospeh and the Jive Talk came to perform their jazz and country influenced music.
Some of the acts amused themselves during the long wait until Jo Whiley’s judgment by playing their tunes on and around our production floor – providing a livelier working atmosphere for the offices surrounding our studios.
Rap lyricist Jae P warms his hands up before he performs for Jo.
As all the artists would be told the outcome by Jo at the end of their performance, with only four being chosen for the main auditions - nervous looks were evident on lots of faces.
Charlie Barnes looked calm but was feeling the nerves on the day.
Some acts had to really change their set up to adjust to the acoustic environment. This was especially the case for hardcore metal band Zenith – only the front man performed while the rest gave moral but silent support.
The lads from Zenith look to their front man (centre) for their chance to make the Channel 4 auditions.
Joanna and the Wolf show their distinctive style as they pose for the camera.
The acts all put plenty of effort into their image as well as their music. Not that we'd like to grass, but a couple of acts may have skipped school to make it to the auditions too.
Alex Zane was on hand to interview the artists and put them at ease with his banter, while some of the artists had some amusing chat of their own. Dr Robert (below) definitely had the gift of the gab with his distinctive northern twang – and was confident of winning the competition.
Dr Robert charms Alex with his confident northern banter while our crew films them.
As acts entered the studio the pressure was on – with Jo Whiley sat on the sofa poised to give her all-important verdict after each performance.
Rochelle gets ready to perform for Jo in the studio.
After chatting with a lot of the performers throughout the day, it was really tough to see most of them leave the studio without a Channel 4 spot, but for those that got through there was applause, high fives, jubilant cheers and joyful tears.
We'll be hosting exclusive previews of some of the open audition recall performers next week.
You'll also be able to see the full reports on Channel 4 and 4Music from 30th October.

Zenith even tho you didn't get through, if jo said anything good about your song then you can use it as a quote and put on your myspace page Jo Whiley said "insert comment here" and it will probably help get you gigs

Zenith with an I say...it doesn't matter what your name is in this competition, unless you are a potential indie mainstream pop group you have no chance of winning this thing. We were the only Metal group there but we still didn't get the chance to try and brake the mould!

i will be busy 30th Oct prepping my broomstick for a nite of frolics...
anyway back to subject: i think most gigging artists can hold an audience for 40mins. as a solo artist i tend to gig locally, my longest is an hour. the difficulty is ensuring u pull in the numbers, most venues requiring min 30. so, u can have a gr8 product and perform well but u still need to create a buzz around you to be a gig jezebel and get noticed by a wider audience ;) i know acts who have management companies who are liasing with record companies to get them deals and enter them into comps like this for the extra publicity.
but yes, it must be frustrating if the finalists dont kno whether they are finalists yet, blimey momma!
(p.s...when i said i don't judge by appearance i have to say i am loving wren's leopard jacket..)

Hey Meg and Mark, thanks for all of those posts last night I was working and they made the blogs worth reading as nothing much has been going on lately.
Anyhows I have come for some help
We have just posted a new song mooseindahoose on mp3unsigned which is fab site if you give it a go and you don't have to sell your music soul to be on it.
Back to the point. Someone mentioned that it sounded like the kind of thing you hear on a Guy Ritchie film. So I thought why not I will send him a demo.
I have managed to find out that his production co is called Toff Guy but can't get any further with an address.
any of you peeps in the know down in the smoke can help us out here. Would be appreciated,
well you have got to keep trying haven't you.
Cheers

Shoot the Duke agree with that totally. What about independent releases where will that leave acts. Universal using to many SUITS!!!!
Shoot the Duke says:
The probable good news Magic is that we will not have to wait to the 30th Oct for an announcement. Although technically Orange could leave the announcement to just before the auditions next week.
From a logistical viewpoint it must be a nightmare for the 54 artists. A major audition in a weeks time. You have to make arrangements for travel, etc, yet you still can't tell anyone. In all probability some bands will have to cancel booked gigs, yet won't be able to give the promoters/venues a valid reason. Remember too that those selected would want as much publicity as possible. Yet for some within a week of being announced as finalists, they will have been eliminated from the competition. In all probability those eliminated will not be allowed to say anything until after the audition process is aired on tv in Nov.
Frustrating for us not to know who they are, but doubly frustrating for the bands involved.
Not knocking any of the finalists, but I think Meg & Mark make a valid point. If you are at the stage where you are ready to put out a product that might sell well, and be able to hold an audience for 40 minutes, then the chances of you having some sort of deal in place already must be high. Wonder how many bands in say the top 500 were excluded because of this?

edthefish says:
Not impressed by the artists above to be honest.
They clearly got the wrong Zenyth!!
Zenith - you guys need to change your name as there will be trademark issues with a security company of the same name.
All this non-exclusive stuff is pants. Even radio stations who play unsigned music not registered with PPL/MCPRS will ask for non-exclusive rights.
If this was the case for some bands then that is a disgrace!

Magic says:
Does that mean we have to wait until the 30th of October for the final line up like the rest of the country?!
Maria Rosa Young says:
i am not shallow enuf to judge them on appearance, but if its true someone was behaving like an ass, then that is sorry, but kinda funny in an ironic way, i also experienced one of them behaving in a very off diva way...but this is the music biz guys! lol.
i did manage to do a search for sarah howells on myspazza, she has a tender beautiful voice in that liz phair vein and is a gr8 acoustic player...
...i wanna see the final line up now, dammit...

lyda - wouldnt hold you breath - we've said it before - we'll say iy agian - just about any serious muso's who entered - if unsigned - will have signed up to slice or last fm or somesuch - we know of a couple of artists who are on the 02 site as well as in this comp - some bands with management didnt even know they were in this comp - so the chances are that most of the 50 are ineligible in some way - the transparency of the web means that people will be checking on the finalists independently of orange - result? - one big headache for the organisers
