its good fun this orange unsigned show but you'll never get big through it. Simple fact most serious music fans dislike x factor, pop idol etc and wont go out and buy records or tickets because a few judges say so.the winner will always be that band that won that "Orange unsigned thing" and no more. dont let this stop you all having a good time at the auditions though.

hey guys this is danny , the singer for The Detours.
i would like to thank people for the compliments including freshman1 and maria-rosa-young!
i would also like to congragulate all bands who have been anounced because they are all extremely good at what they do!

    my top 3 :
    1. minnikin - very talented, rock/metal with a good vibe of epic metal!
    2. page 44 - not really into indie, but i can tell that the talent exceeds the genre in my opinion.
    3. Kubla Khan - this is something id like to hear more of! a band that suprises you giving you the urge to search through their songs with excitement!

to me a band isnt just talent, its character and and personality. we have played many gigs around the uk and 80% of the bands that supported us or who we supported had bad stage presence and had a bad attitude!
i would like to look past the fact that this is a competition and i am very excited to play along side so many good bands.
i hope to see you soon!

  • Svein93 says:

Do you know how hard it is when you hear a band you don't like and are trying to review to not shout "WHY THEM AND NOT US?!?"

I just rely on the fact that I'm not the be all and end all of music, and as such, what I may hate, other people love. (Take Keane and Coldplay, for example... no please... take them... centre of Mount St. Helena would be fine...)

  • peterj says:

i agree with you svein93 on most of what you said.

but i think SUDARSHAN are real good i saw them play live a couple weeks ago and they sound so different to what they have up on here. they didn't play any acoustic stuff it was all loud and probably one of the best gigs i have been to in a long time.

I can't understand why they have not put up there louder stuff on here although i think there acoustic stuff is the DB's. the drummer is A+ and the vocals are raw tuneful and full of energy, Sudarshan have a huge sound live.

I also listened to THE FANGS and they are something different not my thing but something about then stands out. I think they will do ok in this comp but cant see them winning at all.

KUBLA KHAN are pretty awesomne i have never seen them live but there vid is pretty cool and the singer has something that stands out about him but the band look a little dated none the less they sound cool.

i also really like DIRTY FUZZ its a cool name and the singer looks pretty awesome and there songs are rokin in there own right. i do think one of there songs sounds like that song of SCHOOL OF ROCK ha ha. they are a good band though and im sure they will do well here.

i like the WHISKY CATS because they have something different about them, they got that ever so popular UK london sound but it has a twist. I like it.

I like to rock out so im more in to KUBLA KHAN and SUDARSHAN

I can see both them bands going head to head

but i think SUDARSHAN are better.

good luck to all the bands you have ALL DONE VERY WELL TO GET HERE ANYWAYS

  • Zenyth says:

How is that ripping bands off?

Just asking bands to bring 20 people along if you cant do that give-up. We will provide 50 - 150 people. Is that a problem?

We are not asking for money upfront like Wild Plum Promotions or Feedme Music.

Whenever we play away from Cardiff we always got a minibus going.
No point travelling with no-one is there to play to no one.

  • Svein93 says:

In defence of Zenyth here... What they've offered is pretty standard for any promoter. It would be nice if it were the old days where up and coming acts opened for acts that pulled in the crowds and people got to discover new music, but those days are long gone. What has replaced is the "mates" mentality. You go and see your BAND and sod any of the other bands playing, 'cause to like them would be betraying your mates.

People don't just go out to live shows in this country anymore. Even when it's free, for Pete's sake. When I lived in the US, it was great to be in a band, 'cause people just went out to see live music. Didn't care who the band was, you just paid 5 bucks and saw whatever band was playing.

  • clvwn9 says:

Spot on again caro and HP987. Zenyth, dear oh dear

Descent reviews Svien93, I'll go with that, top 5 so far and why?

  • Svein93 says:

OK... It's time for the latest Svein reviews... remembering that I am trying not to be a bitter old sod in my jealousy... :p

Remember, it's 60 seconds of the first song only...

Dirty Fuzz - Good rocking tune. Solid drums and the singer has a really decent rocky yet soulful voice. This is a really, really decent act and I would love to see these guys with my band touring. I think it would provide 2 distinctly different and yet complimentary sounds. Great stuff!

Johnny Taylor - Yawn... I don't get it. I suppose it's clever, but I've heard other artists in the same genre who do more for me than this act did. It's not bad, but I have heard better on here who I think should have gotten through.

Casiokid - My gods... I'm playing some kind of video game... oh wait, the song's kicked it. It's clever... very very clever. I'm not a fan of electronic music, but this shows some creativity and sense of fun. I hear potential ringtones.

Kubla Khan - Good guitar hook with the into. Really grabs you by the short and curlies and I can picture a decent live show with these guys. Bassist is good as well... nearly as good as me :p Decent vocals, that remind me of someone, and I'll figure it out at about 04:00 this morning. It's almost like Stevie Rachelle from Tuff met a non-screechy Axl Rose. I kinda like this... a lot.

Kids of Horses - Bored now... it's about 15 seconds into the song and I'm waiting for 60 seconds so that I can turn it off... And to prove that I did listen to 60 seconds, it turned off first line, second verse. Sorry, but after the powerhouse that was Kubla Khan, something like this just left me cold and uninterested. Absolutely nothing special here whatsoever.

sudarshan - Bog standard rock. It's good. It's nothing special. It's solid, dependable and, unfortunately, utterly forgettable. It sounds like an Alice in Chains inspired act, but it falls short of anything noteworthy. I'm sure they're great live, but nothing to make me think that they'd win.

mmmmmmm, interesting, can't say who I think's gonna win, can't say i really care, the winner will be in the news for a couple of weeks then you'll never hear of them again, unless they get a parking fine or cancer or something . lol.
To be totally honest, i've been that busy promoting my own album, and organising radio interviews, tv appearances, photo shoots, and all the rest, I literally haven't had chance yet to catch up on whats happening... oh and btw, guys, I have some bad news, after I auditioned at the open audition, my acoustic guitarist came home with a massive ego, and tried to tell me how to run my band, and told me to get rid of someone in the band who is so talented its stupid. I ofcourse, told him to take a running jump, so he did- any guitarists out there.... want a band? live in Doncaster or surrounding area?
let me know, I have a small uk tour coming up after xmas, and need a lead guitarist who is a true all rounder- can play rhythm, acoustic and lead. you have to be between 19 and 35 and be committed.
    Ok, thats enough advertising...

apart from all that, see ya soon.

    Scarlet Harlots
    Darleen
Dirty Fuzz(more for the 1 song, but great r n roll sound)
    Whiskey Cats(Not too sure)
    Dreamer(just the 1 song)
Lots of good stuff but not quite special enough!
Very dissapointed by the guitar( or solo) singers so far, except forBo Bruce's lovely voice but boring song.

Lets see the reviews then Mikey boy,

Glad to hear we have some common top 5s, put KublaKhan in because they've got some live tracks in there which means they can actually perform well live, as most of the time bands aren't able to replicate they're energy on stage as it is on CD.
I'd say for this reason they are my tip for doing well along with the Dirty Fuzz, they seem to be quite well organised and they've got good front woman.

Jonny Taylor unfortunately I don't have a myspace, but I do work in a certain department in the industry.

Meg and Mark, I always feel that if you know an artist personally your opinion is somewhat distorted as only you and a few others know their personality and if a stranger hears them for the first time the artist must be able to radiate the feel and character of the song, I feel that they don't quite do this. Shall look forward to seeing them on the show to see if they do or not. This especially applies to singer songwriters and acoustic based acts.

To be honest with you, nothing in the last 3 to 4 years or possibly longer has actually got me turned on enough to go out and buy their new album... but having said that I think there are a few bands on here who have the potential to actually do quite well.

  • Mike Carley says:

Said I wouldn't be back but I saw that Jonny Taylor had left a comment so I checked it out to see if he was a male Kate Nash!
Actually I think he's better coz there's more variety and a bit of a social consciousness and I'm not sure he's a producer's offspring!
I saw there's a bit a tussle going on as to whether it's allright to slag off the bands we don't like or whether we should offer support and encouragement?
As for slagging, off it was actually Alex James(or is it the other one Simon Gavins) who set the tone by his comments on singer-songwriters.
I personally thought his comment was pretty stupid, sure singer songwriters can be naff with a plonky guitar, but what about Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, John Lennon etc..!
If you want to slag off bands it's fine, but be constructive! Show a bit of class and musical knowledge!
Personally I'd quite like a bit of criticism! Nobody's even bothered to slag me off and I'm a singer-songwriter ; )

The only reason why Kate Nash enjoyed success was because she had a very shroud manager. He allegedly booked her to play in various venues across the country, bought all the tickets and gave them away for free so he could advertise the gigs as completely sold out. So all the a and r idiots thought it must be amazing and someone signed her up!

She doesn't even speak like that in real life, I went to the Brit school where she went and she put it on for a laugh one day and it stuck. I am willing to bet you don't speak like that in real life Jonny Taylor!

Yo! Thought it was about time I said hello!

Couldn't agree more with Casiokid - your really heavy by the way - I cant believe the general caliber of the bands I have listened to. Not just the finalists but loads more on the site. I think if the bands are as good recorded as they are live this is going to be one excellent show.

I also think the bitterness on this blog by certain people is appalling, just because you blog doesnt mean people care about what you write. This is a great comp with some great bands and what I hope will be a great vibe. Personally speaking - not only am I delighted that we got through but I cant wait to get to the auditions to see the other bands play live as there are certain bands who I honestly think are brilliant. Every one so far has something to offer or they would not have been voted for or chosen!

Thanks to every one that has said nice things about us and other bands - lets make this comp an amazing thing to be a part of and a superb program to watch - after all this competition is about promoting new unsigned music - lets not hate, lets celebrate!

    Big Love,

i think there are true winners in this competition this year, even though they are a few that shouldnt have been picked, but my bet is on the scarlet harlots to be honest, great unique sound(punk-step) and think it will make them winners.
as much as i wanted my band to be a finalists there is always next year.but my vote is with the scarelt harlots.

For once, we are in total and utter agreement with lucid. People need to stop with the "this is rigged" or "this is a fix", because you're cheapening it for the bands that have been successful in getting through. Whilst they are all naff and we should have gone through, we'll never accuse it of being rigged, 'cause we know how frustratingly close we came.

So, if you can't at least be happy for the successful acts, then what's the point in coming on here anymore?

  • mariakalpiko says:

Wow some of the people on here are acting like f**king two year olds, "Grow Up"!
There are all sorts of artist who have gotten through, and they have all tried so hard.... let them enjoy this, and be supportive of the acts that are good on here, and the ones that aren't so good, let them be.... The judges aren't stupid, they will see what's going to sell, and give them a good story to work with too!
Im still waiting to see if the band I Love got through, as they got the whole package!!!!!!!! =)

  • lsndrws says:

Yes!!! Some serious rock in the competition. I thought it would be a load of Indie Bands, thank god. My favourites so far are Kubla Khan. I saw them at bar rumba last month and they were one of the best bands I've seen in ages!

Really liking the Dirty Fuzz as well, nice to see a woman fronted band in there. Good luck to everyone, can't wait!

  • Mystic_Pickle says:

sorry 'shoot the duke', but you can't be serious about dirty fuzz can you? whats special about them ? very bread and butter if you ask me. probably the reason they havn't been signed yet ?
Does it really matter how many myspace bulletins a band puts out ? does that make them worthy of a record deal? Hmmm.

sven: i know of other bands who have yet to be announced have pulled out of lastbandstanding because of this comp, i hope you give them due respect as well.

page 44 arent my cup of tea, but whoever has been posting on these blogs has a good general attitude towards the competition so far.

19 myspace bulletin though, it only shows 10 on the main page (ive had bands do that and ive had to delete them because i miss info from other bands). i suppose you can never do enough 'whoring' if you want to succeed that bad, and page 44 certainly do. that wasnt a dig by the way.

IM NOT HAPPY about certain bloggers diverting the attention away from the music, ie allegation of rigging, and general negative remarks, people dont want you here, please leave the bands who got through in peace, and let fans post praise and encouragement. deal with whatever hangup youve got and move on.

Final proof. It is a fix!
Have you read the latest blog by Dirty Fuzz? They can say what they like, yet in the last few days weve been censored for spelling out the charity RACP, using another name for cat beginning with p, and we can't use our band initials! All of them censored.
If orange ever find out what Shoot the Duke actually means they will probably chuck us off the site. lol.
With our serious head on for a minute. Been following Dirty Fuzz for a while. They have been getting rave reviews from inside the business for some time, and their next logical step is a record deal.
Says a lot about the state of the majors when bands as good as them are not already signed. A few years ago a number of majors would have taken a chance with them. If they get through to the last few lets hope someone in the industry wakes up to whats happening under their noses, and signs them.
    Best of luck guys.

  • Svein93 says:

OK.... I've been challenged, and who am I to ignore a challenge...

Review time: 60 seconds listened to of the first song on their profile... first impressions count.

In no particular order (and I will try and stay as objective as I can, remembering that you all suck and we should have won this... :p )

Self Esteem - A bit to bland and middle of the road for my tastes. There was nothing that really grabbed me and made me say "I want to hear how this goes." It was well produced and well played, but not what I would call particularly memorable.

Kof - This is a hard song for someone like me to judge, 'cause I really dislike hip-hop. Kof has a decent voice, and the song was not repulsive, although I found it repetitive.

Scarlot Harlots - I don't get it. To me, it sounded a bit sloppily put together and had that whole Arctic Monkeys sound that is popular, but I think is pretty dire. I really couldn't hear anything that made me want to hear more than the initial 60 seconds.

Weekend Millionnaire - This is a bit more my speed. Good guitaring and solid beat going on there. I like the vocals, remind me of Velvet Revolver. In fact, the song reminds me of something off of the Contraband album. It sounds like something that should close a movie. Impressive stuff. I will go back and listen a bit more later.

page 44 - This is well mixed and I can imagine this being played live. The vocals are decent, and this is certainly something that I could see going the distance in the competition. This is a "SONG" that could get stuck in people's heads. It's not my cup of tea, but I think I'd enjoy seeing you perform.

M101 - I didn't like it when it started. I didn't hear a lot of commercial appeal with this song. However, as the song continued, it grow on me a bit. Not enough for me to want to check out the rest of their material, but I didn't hate it.

btw any reviews due from Svein tonight?

  • Svein93 says:

OK... after much thought and deliberation, I've decided NOT to post reviews on here of the 50 bands. I have a very good reason.

    1) It will be hard to stay objective, because part of me is going to be saying "Are these guys better than my band, and if not, why did they get through and we didn't?" Hey... I'm human and I get the green-eyed monster as much as anyone.
    2) Even if I was completely objective, every bad review would elicit a "sour-grapes" reaction... I'm posting a bad review because I'm miffed that we didn't get in.

Also, on a sorta related note... I, and the rest of Torn Asunder, think it's bad that there have been "hints" that this competition is somehow rigged. We can testify, as an act that was very close to getting through, that PrincessTV acted above board at all time, that we could see. Those bands that have gotten through are to be congratulated and NO-ONE should try and take their accomplishments away from them.

On a personal note, I'm (at the moment) rooting for Page44, because they had to leave one competition to focus on this one, so I hope it proves worth it. And if you ever feel like pointing any of you copious fans in the general direction of Torn Asunder, would be greatly appreciated.

Little bit disappointed with the finalists! It's just that the majority so far sound sloppy. I was expecting something really special. A tight, kick ass rock band with a great vocal or a pop band with a real catchy hook. Would have thought with the amount of acts that entered, it should have been easy to find some top unsigned talent. I understand that the acts that had the most votes are out of the control of the judges, but there is easily a hundred bands and solo's on the site better than any of the finalist so far. Hope the next batch of hopefulls are a bit stronger. Best of luck to you all! you gotta be in it to win it!Sorry for the doom and gloom but that's my honest opinion so far!!

  • page 44 says:

Like i said we aren't bitter and aren't throwing any blame around, i simply answered a question. Like i said in earlier posts i'm sure there are lots of bands that are entered into both, it only became a problem because we were 2nd in last band standing and stood a good chance of making the final 10.

But nevermind, you are right the Orange Act prize and exposure looks more lucrative hence why we chose to leave last band standing. Just will be a bit gutted if we left last band standing and we leave orange on 11th oct! there is no need to apologise, but sorry if it did seem like we were blaming you etc

  • Svein93 says:

Page44: We weren't picking on you 'cause you're beating us in Last Band Standing. Hell, we don't have a hope or prayer of winning that competition this year as we found out about it too late. My point was IF you had gotten through to the TV finals and made it in the finals of Last Band Standing as well, from what I have seen of Orange, they'd cut you loose in a heartbeat, and the Orange prize seems a hell of a lot more lucrative in the long run.

Looking though the terms and conditions of the LBS competition, it doesn't look like they hold any residual rights over your stuff. Better to get out now and give Orange the full shot than risk being disqualifed from both at a later point. That's the point I was trying to make.

Apologies if it looked like I was having a go or being hypocritical. The only reason I mentioned you was that I had noticed you in the Top 10 of LBS this morning. Kinda stuck out!

I'm not to sure about the full ins and outs of slice the pie as we havent ever really looked into it, but i think you sort of sign the rights away to your music to your fans. Or at least you get them to pay for your music before you made it. but its something to do with signing the rights to your songs away for a certain period of time!

the other competitions you don't have to sign away rights to songs, they just don't want bands leaving half way through the competition because they have won another one
