interesting that this blog is still running - interesting news from saturday night... interesing about related bands...

yeah there were bands that we think are head and shoulders above some of the finalists -

we're still following all this because we were plugging tommy reilly from the very start for his song 'jackets' - as some of you will know - also we know one of kids of horses - so fair play making the 54....

free speech is a bit of an issue on here is anyone running a counter blog?

the band who i think are awesome live didn't get into the final 54

the band to do with pastagate i'd said ages ago i thought were only a maybe to get through to the next bit of the comp after listening to them on here ... and i did listen to all the finalists through 7 speakers :)

it will be someone who they think is commercial who will win

not good throwing food at a judge whatever they've said to you.....there maybe other record peeps watching at the auditions or will be watching on tv that will be interested in picking up people who are really good that don't get through.

i agree with lucidintervals comment below.
the band i think are awesome live never even got through to the final selection...they were disappointed but they've just got on with what they were doing before and will be recording some new songs this week :)

the band everyone is talking about were lucky getting through and have the chance to play live on tv, this show is good publicity and exposure for the finalists however far they get.

would love to know what the judge said to start all this off??

Shoot the Duke: say what you will, i think the programme is set out exactly like it makes out to be and if you dont like that then tough. life isnt fair and the producers at the end of the day are making a programme, you cant expect it to cater to everyones little whims. maybe if people didnt go into it with such a desperate attitude then they wouldnt get so torn up about it.

Fair enough BasilBitBullet. Hope it was a one off from AJ. He was quite supportive of the bands last year.
Don't agree with what was done, but every artist deserves respect from the judges, and any criticism should be constructive. If the judges are going for cheap laughs, then its not the programme it makes out to be, and not one I would be interested in watching.
Or one that serious musicians would be interesting in entering again next year.

i believe in good and bad karma. i dont believe its true that words cant hurt you. words can wound. in general certain provocations can result in senseless acts. there wer times when i was small and bullied i wud prefer to be punched than called names. i have since resolved those issues and realise both are acts of ignorant aggression and fear based. but i will say, while i dont agree with throwing food esp when peeps are starving, until i hear more opinions of what occured i cant judge it... and lets face it, thats pretty impossible...
    peace out.

Respond to what. I dont see the need to respond to a verbal assault with a physical one. You obviously do. Including using fists.

Are we now saying its alright for any act to assault any judge if they don't like their comments?

  • Shoot the Duke says:

Wetdog, from what you and other posters who were there are saying, don't you think they are better off out of the competition? You can bet the programme won't be edited in favour of the band concerned.
Twas a good competition last year, hope its not going to be dumbed down this year.

  • Maria Rosa Young says:

as a lady i dont agree with food throwing for ethical and social reasons BUT if the said band member was to...

throw his guitar in the air...hurl the pasta...and then catch the guitar i the same chord...then that really wud be rock n roll...

this was actually done by THE rock n roll hero jimi hendrix (without the pasta obviously) ; )

It was rock n roll that they didn't get through!

Show some respect for someone who throws food in someone else's face, knowing they can't respond. Err, don't think so.
Now if they had done that after being put through, and then walked out of the competition, that would have at least been rock and roll.

Wow! Just wow! I went to sunday's auditions and the quality of the bands compared to last year is effing amazing! There were just so much good stuff. There were a couple of bands that didn't get through which dissappointed me but i guess they couldn't put everyone through. The last act of the night was truly amazing, they are destined for big big things! the people who left after their friends bands played will be cursing when they see the show!

  • snailear says:

I was at the auditions yesterday to see a perticular finalist and it was an absolute disgrace. The bands that got through (although i didnt stay for nearly half of them)were talentless and relentlessly classless. I dont have a clue what simon gavin is looking for or what his credentials are of finding talent in the past but he acted like a completely unfunny standup comedian and didnt mention the music ever really with an act. He commented on the clothes and the attitudes. This programme is not a cool alternative version of xfactor, it is the same thing. catered for a cooler audience possibly but still the same thing.

I saw a couple of bands that were awesome that didnt get, everyone seemed quite shocked at this. Especially considering some of the bands they let through. It was so obviously contrived, even to the extent where simon or lauren lerverne would whisper into Lethal Bizzle's ear during or BEFORE a performance to tell him, i assume, which way to vote. Alex James has completely forgotten that he used to be a cool guy and now just chucks out pointlessly arch criticism or praise, neither being constructive. I hear he got his comeupences backstage though, so maybe he will judge better next week unless the grasp of Princess tv/Simon Gavin is too controlling to give anyone the chance to say what they actually think about a song.

  • Charl25 says:

I was at the auditions on Saturday (both sessions)to support one of the finalists, and the judging seemed very peculiar. It was also apparent that the emphasis is not on talent or musicianship, but on commercial viability - i.e., you might be a great band with a great song and a great attitude, but mass market appeal is preferential. I think that's a shame. Having said that, there were some fantastic performances at the weekend - not all of which were put through - it will be very interesting to see what is actually aired on the TV shows.
Finally - if you are going to any of the performances that are coming up, kindly do not BOO the acts, mock the artists or generally act like a total tw*t. There were several incidents on Saturday where members of the audience thought it was clever and incredibly amusing to boo or make negative jibes loudly during the judging. We don't see you up there putting your nuts on the block, so unless you are a Grammy-winning recording artist who might have earned the right to criticise by selling millions of records, keep your negative crap to yourselves.
    I thank you.

Hi everybody I was at Saturdays gig and never laughed so much. Watching acts sounding like Duffy and Mcfly taking on bands that sounded like AC/DC and Metallica, what the f**was that all about. Little advice for the judges you should watch the x-factor because bestunsigned is right you seem to be competing with the x - factor :P Very disappointed with the acts that got through, make your own minds up when it comes on TV.

  • foxy says:

I would like to echo whats just been said. I was also at the auditions and was shocked by standard of judging. Not only did they let some through who weren't that great but they didn't let others through who were obviously talented, had a good song, and even had positive comments from the judges! I just don't understand what it is they are looking for. I they wanted a good song and people who are fun. Obviously not.......? Overall the judges this year didn't seem that confident, or clear, in their feedback.

You'll have to check out the tv series to see what I mean. I think there will be similar comments once it is aired though......

I cant say who was good because it would be unfair on everyone waiting to see it on tv. Put it this way. Some stuff that blew me away did not get through and some stuff that made me laugh and i thought was a joke did get through. It made no sense. Simon from the x factor would have been a better judge then some of the judges on the day. You will have to wait and see it on tv. I think people will be shocked at the quality of some of the stuff they let slip through their fingers.

What really annoyed me was certain acts begin saying 'please let me through. it means so much to me'. it was pathetic and thats why it reminded me of the x factor

Reading some of the succesful band blogs I don't think even the bands know who got through on votes, and who didn't. We will never know because this way it makes better television.

I was at the auditions last night and I have to say I was blown away by some of the talent out there. Two bands were awesome and one in particular was mind blowing. The room was buzzing. It felt like you had just witnessed the start of a band that will become icons worldwide.

Obviously i am not going to give anything away nor mention any names of the bands who did get through or didnt.

One thing that I didnt like was how put on the whole thing was and so false. The standard of judging was very poor and two out of the four judges did not deserve to sit on the panel. It seems like a nobody can become a celebrity with the greatest of ease these days without actually having done anything.

I do think the show has lost some of its credibility from last year and I think now its in competition with the X factor but I had a good time anyway and the drinks were so cheap! I was hamered. One bands performance has to be seen to be believed. Wow! For those 4 minutes I was in heaven.

No band, no voice modulation, no drum beating, no thrash, no repetitive words, no long leads in, no air in the middle, no rap, no similarity.
It heartens, and makes it more apparent that a singer songwriter s had no place in this.
you showed the benchmark and ok,
For some singer songwriters, it was a fruitless endeavour.
Question: How can you place talent against preference,!
You will see and hear “Jamie Dent” not on this stage, but another, as it is without doubt, and with no animosity, that he has (like many of you) just not got into the right ear.

Its about 16 bands to go through to the acoustic/interview stage, and then that is reduced to the 8 who will go out on the tour.

and to respond to The Mile. You won't go back to square one if you don't get through the audition guys. Your correspondance from orange, plus some selected quotes from the judges, attached to your pr pack will open up quite a few doors, particularly with promoters and venues.

Kublakhan defo stand out above the rest as the moment imo.
The other 15places are likely to be very closey contested.
Its likely the 15 will have an even split of indie / metal / singer song writers just so they can try and get an x factor style split between the groups. I personally dont think that should be the way it should be but i'm sure it will be.

To danwrite - Just to confirm for you that we are on the 11th audition up in leeds, hope you can make it.
Also to andrewtzar - thanks for the kind words, think that must be about the 3rd time we've been mentioned on here ha ha, well at least we're keeping clear of the flack some of the bands are getting, hopefully we wont be as invisible to the judges. Reckon anyone that got through to this stage must be ok so best of luck, and remember it usually is down to pure luck, so any of you that didnt get through dont take it to heart, after this first round there are gonna be 30 odd bands that are back to square one, and do you really think there gonna be shouting from the roof tops about how they just lost out, if its us i think we'll just knuckle down and get back to working hard at it, business as usual

My favourites so far, in no particular order:

    Dirty Fuzz
    WhiskyCats
    KublaKhan
    Arthur Rigby and the Baskervylles
    Frances Lobo
    Harry Brookes Jnr
    Toby Sebastian

Really impressed with Frances Lobo from today.

just had a listen to todays new 10 finalists, these are the ones i would have put through to the next bit .....

    Axe Kid
    Harry Brooks Jnr
    and maybe Francis Lobo

hoping a lot of the bands that are finalists sound better live!

Some great bands in the finalists list. Love The Sibling Rivalry, I've seen them live and they are excellent.

nope everyone has there own opinions and is entitled to them, we don't pretend we are going to be everyones cup of tea! we enjoy what we do and so do a lot of other people!

  • stemos says:

page 44 and Self esteem are very mediocre, dirty fuzz average, nothing special. Jonny Taylor, Belle Humble, Toby Sebastian
, The Sibling Rivalry and all the signer/songwriters forgettable.
Sudarshan very poor and Kubla Khan are ok. As for the rest, not worth mentioning. Let's hope for better. Anyone going to try and change my mind!

What do you like anyway? I quite like the Turbocats i heard on your mix tape. Do you think they got through?
Sorry though im not trying to pick a fight just talking about what im enjoying listening to, clvwn9

    Fair point

  • bestunsigned says:

Hey clvwn9 im just expressing my opinion. No need to be like that. I know Self Esteem but i am not friends with them. To say they dont have the talent or songs to stay up with the bands you mention i find stupid. I think they songs are head and shoulders above those bands and far more talented. Much more catchy and energetic.

Belle Humble is good at what she does allthough its not my cup of tea but she has a good sound and a good voice. No need to slag her off.

The whiskeycats. Ok they are not original but i enjoy listening to them.
Sudarshan are a poor mans Alice in Chains.
Dirty Fuzz opening song is an AC/DC riff im pretty sure
Kubla Khan songs just dont do anything for me. They are very good and tight but they just dont do anything for me. I get bored.

If you dont like Self Esteem fair enough but you wont sway me. I assure you that. I think they are brilliant

  • Craggie says:

I'm not diggin Dirty Fuzz in the slightest though. clvwn9 Just don't see the attraction! Rock band with a girl fronting has to have awesome vocals (skin or Gwen for example) don't get it? Sorry.

  • clvwn9 says:

    Jonny Taylor
    Whiskeycats
    Self Esteem
    Belle Humble
    Fafewell To Felix
    Toby Sebastian
    Doaldrummer
    The Sibling Rivalry

All should be eliminated in the first round, very poor choice bestunsigned

  • bestunsigned says:

The standard of the next ten has picked up. It should be an exciting competition. Out of the 1st 40 these are my 9 that i think should go through to the next round (in no particular order). Feedback welcomed

    Jonny Taylor
    Whiskeycats
    Self Esteem
    Belle Humble
    Fafewell To Felix
Harry Brooks Jnr- allthough i hate chessy pop but its good
    Toby Sebastian
    Doaldrummer
    The Sibling Rivalry

great to see tommy reilly in the top 54 - we've been plugging for him from the start - as some of the regulars here will know

  • bestunsigned says:

Wow. Finalists are up. First of all im well happy that Self Esteem are through. Ive been backing them all the way from the start. Had a look at your vid boys. I think it shows just what a great performance you will put on live. Shame about the quality. Stick to making songs not videos. Thats my advice. I cant get your song one more time out of my head. Absolutely brilliant. Im sure you will do well and possibly go all the way.

Other acts that have cought my ear are Belle Humble and the Whiskeycats.

Most over rated atcs in my opinion are Kublah Khan, Dirty Fuzz and Sudarshan in the rock genre. Cant see what the fuss is about but thats just my opinion. Good luck to you anyway.

I urge everyone to go have a listen to Self Esteem. They are my tip to win it!

Simply type in 'self esteem one more time' into youtube and our home made video will come up for the song we will be auditioning with tomorrow. We made it just for a laugh and we would love to know what people think. Please remember we dont know anything about making videos. It is a first time amateur attempt.

The Mile do look really good and I also like the sound of Darleen, I think his competition is going to be really good this year. Loads of different styles. Just been on kubla khans myspace as well, they have got loads of live videos on there, amazing sound. Looking forward to hearing some new ones today. Good luck to all bands!

    morning guys!

dont stress, some peeps are prob just curious and might not have read previous blogs, and if it is anything more, just respond with your truth...i still dont get why zenyth were slated for offering cardiff gigs as a venue. anyone who is gigging knows that venues ask you to bring at least 15-30 paying peeps. it isn't ripping anyone unless punters hate the performances, lol. sometimes i get paid, sometimes i just get the beer and chocolate which is fine by me cos i actually ROCK FOR THE LOVE OF IT ; )

Anyhoo, i have to catch a train to Brighton...!

oh and peeps going to the orange gigs this weekend, please blog here about what u thought and tell other members of the audience too. esp, if u have no allegiance to one single band altho of course am interested what fans say too.

l8ers..have a wicked weekend and good luck bands!!!

Hi, just to confirm things, angel_eyes is not lynda from the fan page, it is however another fan of ours! we do not condone the comment, people are just getting upset about us being forced to leave other competitions etc! but orange are fully aware of the situation and we have taken the necessary steps asked of us regarding these competitions! so can we please let it lie and get on to waiting impatiently for todays finalists to be revealed!

  • caro says:

looking forward to listening to the next finalists later today :)

angel_eyes (i think i am correct in this) you run the fans page for page44 so i can see why you wouldn't like the comment posted by dancewithme, if orange know about the other competition page44 are in and say it's ok then there is no problem..... how many accounts on orange do you have lynda?

we are going to do WOWYH! its on our player thingymajig, but the recording is ollllllld and with a diff drummer! to be honest i know a lot of bands must say this, but i don't think our recordings do us full justice, especially the older ones, they didn't really catch the energy of our live performances!
